Greetings again,
thought we'd update you on the last few days. This week has been fairly busy work wise. Still learning Avid editing platform and enjoying the steep curve...last week we cut a scene from a comedy feature that was made a couple of years back called The Wedding Bros...its ok i guess...it was made by a first time director so the scene we were working on had some flaws like poor photography coverage, bad eyelines and some inconsistent performances. Nevertheless, it had a decent budget and some familiar faces in it (including one dude called Joe Polito who has been in most Coen Brothers films, amongst others, plus a bunch of TV shows). Anyway, it was a tough scene to cut and a good experience....i will probs use it for the final showreel.
This week we have been working on documentary films. I love docos but i am not keen on working on them so this week is a bit of a flat spot in terms of building a reel. Still, the education and training part is still very strong and i am putting in the hours to make the most out of it. Today we went to Splash Studio's which is a successful sound post-production facility. They have done the sound design / mixes for heaps of well known TV and films...including a bunch of Spike Lee films and some MTV, VH1 shows. Interesting.
Last night Gem and i had another night out. Gem bought some tickets to a band called Best Coast - watch one of their songs by clicking here (it has cats in it). We had an early dinner up the road at a place called Supper and enjoyed another large meal and a bottle of wine for peanuts. Calamari, risotto, lasagne and coffee (Gem had ice cream) washed down with yet another fine pinot...sweet. Then we hit a music venue called Webster Hall which used to be the famous Ritz back in the day. It is a big, dark, old theatre that is now a haunt for hipster musos, models and fashionista types - there was no shortage of black rimmed glasses!! Anyway, twas a great gig and the place was packed. We chatted with the locals and introduced our baby to some surfer, punk, rock music. I will say that there was the distinct smell of the devils lettuce and incense in the air...the East Village is one funky place my friends. (Gem here - we actually found a perfect spot for me and my short stature away from the smoke. I perched on an old speaker all night and could see over everyone's heads for once!)
Had a few drinks with a mate from the course this arvo after we knocked off. He is from a small town outside of Houston and went to college in Austin. He is my age and also works as a designer so it was interesting chewing the fat about work and life in NYC. One of his good mates from back home is Jack White's personal designer...he does all of the branding, posters, packaging etc for all of his bands and is now earning hundreds of thousands of dollars drawing cool pictures. Slightly envious.
Weather wise we have been 'lucky' getting to see so much snow. Its now a record i believe and there is more snow forecasted for this weekend. We have been keeping up to date with the horrible weather conditions back on Aussie soil - those poor Queenslanders. Glad to hear no lives have been lost at this stage. We are missing everyone now....could also use a swim under a warm sun!
well, that is pretty much it. Gem has been busy taking photos and finding dresses for her bulging belly. She looks beautiful and claims that she is starting to feel the odd little kick which is very cool. Today she bought an ipod speaker system for babies in the womb. Its basically a strap on speaker belt thingy...let the musical education begin. Photos to come.
thats about it i reckon. Tonight is chill out with the basketball night and this weekend i will be working at the college (its getting very busy and we have a weekend seminar). Gem plans to scour the flea markets and we might try and see another flick.
ummm....strange fact. A stubby holder in America is called a "koozie". A difference that lead to a humorous conversation with the merchandise guy.
yep. Done.
Love Ads and Gem x
