Pastrami on Rye baby!!
When Harry Met Sally table
He's Alive...Aliiiive
Well, I am starting to feel normal again. This flu has been a nasty one people. My course was cancelled yesterday, they do that when they predict transport issues during snow storms. As it turns out, we woke up yesterday to a foot of snow outside. Its a good thing my day was cancelled because it was my worst flu day by far. Bad enough to warrant a visit to the docs.
After much searching around we finally found a doc that would see me at short notice...and he was literally across the road...behind the yellow pimp mobile previously uploaded. This dude was...umm...different. Walked into the surgery and was slightly shocked when i saw a bunch of framed magazine and newsprint articles about 'Dr Dave'. As it turns out, Dr Dave is a very cool guy. He's probably late 40's, covered in tatts, believes health care should be run by not for profit organisations and has two Harley Davidson bikes. Watch this vid when you have 2 mins:

Anyway, Dave was very helpful but a little confused by my symptoms - mostly because of my weak long splitting headache. He drew some blood and we chatted for ages about all kinds of stuff. After that, he dished out some meds to counter the virus and help me sleep (have not slept more than a few hours at a time since we got here) and gave us some tips on restaurants in the area. We tried out his recommendation for Japanese (HANA in the Lower East Side)and were very impressed....very cool and very cheap. Spent the rest of the day trying to rest. Across the road from HANA is a legendary candy store called Economy Candy. We will definitely go back there!!
Woke up today feeling heaps better. Cough syrup is awesome. Thankfully the people above us didn't walk around all night with hard bottom shoes. I was actually starting to believe that the only thing that lived up there was a centipede wearing wooden clogs.
i called in sick again to get some extra rest and give more time for the antibiotics to kick in. We decided to hit the famous Katz's Delicatessen and then see a flick. Katz is...ummm...FREAKIN AWESOME. We both had the pastrami on rye which is their signature dish. photos above. Bought a couple of cool postcards and will send one to some friends who i believe will appreciate well cooked meats the most.
Also went and saw Sofia Coppola's new film 'Somewhere'. Being a fan of her previous films we were both bitterly disappointed...it sucked and we should have seen 127 Hours down the street. But that Katz sandwich was terrific.
Question - why don't people use the word 'terrific' anymore? granted its not a cool word but i think it still serves a purpose with the younger generation.
Ok, i will finish off with a brief rundown on my course so far. Basically its an intensive editing course specialising in three types of software...one of which i am fairly comfortable with. The people there are well connected and pretty cool. They certainly know their stuff so i am just trying to soak up what i can. There are 4 other people in the class so there is plenty of one on one with the instructors. The 4 dudes are pretty cool...all very friendly... 3 of the 4 are experienced and one is a very (very) large older dude named Bud. Poor old Bud is totally out of his depth. One guy i have become mates with is Errol, a cool black dude who loves basketball. He wants me to 'roll with him' to see some pickup games in Jersey.
Even though we started with the software i was most comfortable with i quickly realised that i have HEAPS to learn. We are basically going through new skills and techniques whilst cutting scenes from local indie films and TV shows like Monk and Leverage. This will be money well spent and the contacts will be a bonus. On Tuesday the editor for The Silence of the Lambs was in...this guy is a legend in the industry with a huge body of work that keeps growing. He just cut Robert Redfords new film. Next Thursday i will be heading to a Q&A and screening with him...sweeet.
ok...bit of a long one today...sorry if this one was a little boring but still a bit under the weather. Some recent snaps up top.
cheers peeps,
